The members of the PAA Executive Board met on 31 October 2002 and the PAA-Europe Conseil d’Administration met alone and then with the International Board on 1 November 2002 during the PAA Europe annual meeting that was held at the Museum für Völkerkunde, Dresden. Dr. Frank Tiesler, Beatrice Voirol and the entire staff of the museum graciously hosted the conference. Over fifty people attended. The activities included viewing the exhibitions, Die Kunst Neuguineas (The Art of New Guinea), Lebendige Traditionen in Neuguinea (Living Traditions in New Guinea), Inseln der Sehnsucht-Palau (Island of Yearning-Palau), a tour of the museum’s storage facility in Klotzsche, and a day and one half of papers, films and reports. We extend our sincere thanks to our hosts for their hospitality and hard work on this very successful conference.
7th International Symposium of the Pacific Arts Association
Repositioning Pacific Arts: Artists, Objects, Histories
Christchurch, New Zealand June 2003
Karen Stevenson, Vice President Pacific
The 7th International Symposium of the Pacific Arts Association will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand 23-26 June 2003 at the Hotel Grand Chancellor. Proposals to present papers at the conference are due in January-February 2003 and all will be notified by 15 February. Registration brochures will be sent at the end of January. If you are not on our mailing list, please contact Amanda Sharman at amanda@conference.co.nz and we will make sure you receive all necessary information.
As the theme suggests, we are looking to reposition the arts of the Pacific from the fringe where they often lay, to the center of debate. Addressing issues that surround these arts from a contemporary perspective does not exclude discussions of museum and curatorial practice, the objects themselves, or the artist. It is our aim to be as inclusive in our interactions as possible. For more information see our website at www.conference.co.nz/AA.
Journal of the Pacific Arts Association
Jerome Feldman, Editor
Volume 25 of Pacific Arts is a special edition devoted to The Eighth Festival of Pacific Arts, held in Nouméa in 2000. We have reflections and analyses on the history of these festivals as well as reviews of the performances and issues raised at the event. Our special editor for the volume is Karen Stevenson and she has compiled a very interesting set of articles from very diverse and differing points of view.
