International Symposium VIII, 2005

Due to unforeseen circumstances, PAA will not publish a book including the symposium papers and presentations from the VIII International Symposium in Salem. However, a new relationship between Pacific Arts Journal and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota presents another venue for the publication of these papers. Over the next year and a half, PAA will publish 2 to 4 special volumes of the journal devoted to the Salem conference. The first papers will be featured in the Fall 2010 issue of the journal.

The Executive Committee thanks the membership, particularly those who presented and submitted papers for publication, for their patience.

PAA INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM VIII, 2005
19-23 July 2005
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts

Theme: Pacific Diasporas: People, Art, and Ideas On the Move
Since the arrival of the earliest voyagers, people, art/objects, and ideas have been continually on the move within, beyond, and back to the Pacific. The extensive holdings at Peabody Essex Museum foster dialogue about collections and collecting, both historically and in the present; of repatriation issues; of strategies within the Pacific to recapture cultural traditions and histories, and encourage, collect or showcase contemporary art in new cultural centers; of the lives of Pacific Island artists, scholars, and collectors, past and present, including those transplanted to other lands in the Pacific, to North America and/or Europe; of the impact of new and expanding technologies, markets, and telecommunications, as well as cross-cultural artistic exchanges taking place around the world.

VENUE
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts
Peabody Essex Museum, in historic Salem, Massachusetts, will host the VIII Pacific Arts Association Symposium. PEM reopened in June 2003 after a dramatic transformation featuring 250,000 square feet of new and renovated galleries and public spaces. With its first acquisitions in 1799, augmented by early nineteenth century contributions by the East India Marine Society, the Oceanic collection now includes more than 15,000 pieces from over thirty-six island groups in the Pacific. Several hundred are well-documented Polynesian pieces from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, many of which are of world significance, such as the Hawaiian temple image, Kuka'ilimoku, a double Fijian spirit house, a Marquesan carved wooden arm, and unique painted tapa from the Austral Islands.

Salem is located 16 miles north of Boston, on Massachusetts' Atlantic coast. Rich in history, Salem was founded in 1626 in an area originally called Naumkeag by its Native American residents. Over the next two centuries, Salem developed into a rich and famous seaport, its merchants trading across the Pacific to China and India. It is also well-known as the site of the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials and home to Nathaniel Hawthorne and his House of the Seven Gables. Salem is filled with historic homes, museums, good restaurants, and shop-lined streets.

Many other important museums lie on the Atlantic coast. For example, at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, only four hours by train from nearby Boston, the exhibition, Adorning the World: Art of the Marquesas Islands, will be on display.
