The art gallery Michael Reid at Elizabeth Bay is delighted to showcase the work of Samuel Tupou in his first Sydney exhibition Somewhere in time.
Having gained a reputation as an innovative silkscreen printmaker, Tupou continues to reinvent and excel, pushing Australian contemporary art in new cultural direction. Tupou's works are layered silkscreen prints on sheets of Perspex. Using high-keyed colours, complimentary opposites, pattern and repetition, his artworks contradict the super-flat process of screen-printing by creating depth within the composition.
Tupou reinterprets the traditional motifs of Tonga. The symmetrical and geometric patterns of Tapa cloth and their symbolic meanings inspire the backgrounds of his work, while in their foregrounds he positions stylised images from popular culture to express his Western identity.
