As part of the annual Jolika Fellows program, the de Young hosts two artists from Papua New Guinea in celebration of the Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art, located in the Marcia and John Friede Gallery.
Purago Marabe is a self-taught artist and poet from the Eastern Highlands Province, PNG. He promotes sustainable development and collects seeds, stories, and songs. His current project is to reforest his own residential lands with a jungle of trees. Martin Morububuna is from Kiriwina, the largest of PNG’s Trobriand Islands. He is an esteemed contemporary artist and has executed commissioned works that include murals for the University of Papua New Guinea, carvings for the State Banquet Table in Parliament House, and facades for local markets.
