Call for 2011 PAA at CAA Session Proposals! Deadline: September 1, 2009

Call for 2011 Session Proposals for February 9-12 in New York
Pacific Arts Association at College Art Association
Deadline: September 1, 2009

The Pacific Arts Association (PAA), founded in 1978, is an international organization devoted to the study of all the arts of Oceania. PAA provides a forum for dialogue and awareness about Pacific art and culture. By connecting individuals and institutions around the world, PAA encourages greater cooperation among those who are involved with the creation, study, and exhibition of Pacific art.

PAA is an affiliate society of the College Art Association (CAA), the primary national professional organization in the United States whose members are committed to excellence in the practice, teaching, and research of and about art, art history, and related disciplines.

As an affiliated society, PAA may sponsor one proposal for a 2½ hour regular session at the Annual Conference. The Annual Conference Committee will consider a PAA-sponsored session proposal, along with the other submissions it receives, on the basis of merit.

PAA welcomes session proposals for presentation at CAA in New York that cover the breadth of current thought, practice and research in Pacific art, architecture, theory and criticism, pedagogy, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology. Sessions will be chosen on the basis of its relevance and interest to PAA and its constituency.

Prospective session chairs are encouraged to familiarize themselves with PAA via www.pacificarts.org and to also familiarize themselves with the CAA proposal submission process at www.collegeart.org in the event that PAA selects their proposal for support. Please note: Any session proposal can be submitted directly to CAA but only one will receive a letter of support from PAA for sponsorship and consideration and must be submitted to PAA first before the August 15, 2009 deadline.

Proposals are collected by Stacy Kamehiro and Bernida Webb-Binder and forwarded to PAA officers for selection. The officers will choose one proposal to be submitted, along with a letter of support from PAA, to the CAA Annual Conference Committee. The successful chair will need to have or secure CAA membership as well as be a member of PAA.

Proposal Submission Guidelines:
Please submit your session proposal electronically to Stacy Kamehiro at kamehiro@ucsc.edu or Bernida Webb-Binder baw78@cornell.edu.

Proposals consist of:
•    A description of the proposed session of not more than 400 words including title, rationale, and discussion areas. Please explain any special or timely significance that the session may hold for the field or discipline.
•    Your CV and, if applicable, the CV of your co-chair; no more than two pages in length each.

Once the PAA officers have made their final selection, the session chair will be responsible for meeting all CAA deadlines regarding submitting the call for papers, abstracts for selected papers, and audio-visual orders. Once the proposal has been sponsored by PAA and accepted by CAA, Bernida and Stacy are happy to assist in distributing the call for papers on relevant listserves.
