Momoe von Rieche & Albert Wendt

Momoe von Rieche & Albert Wendt
McCarthy Art Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand
16 March- 1 April 2009

Presenting as part of Celebrate Pasifika 2009, the McCarthy Gallery proudly represents
Momoe von Rieche and Albert Wendt. This is their first joint exhibition to celebrate Pasifika.
Momoe von Rieche is acclaimed internationally as a painter, illustrator and poet.
She is a leading member of that first generation of Pacific artists who pioneered
the development of what is now known as contemporary Pacific Art. She remains
a catalyst in the shaping of that art. Her work has been exhibited all over the
world. She has also published at least five collections of poetry, which have been
translated into many languages, and illustrated many children's books.

Albert Wendt is acknowledged internationally as one of New Zealand’s and the
Pacific’s major novelists, poets and intellectuals. His work has been translated
into many languages and is taught throughout the world. What is not well known
is that he is also a painter, but has spent most of his life writing. He returned to
painting in the year 2000 and has been painting since then and has continued
painting with the same intensity and passion. The first solo exhibition of his
paintings was at the McCarthy Art Gallery in 2008. Both artists’ are intellectual
thinkers in their own paradigm and profound authorship of their individuality;
both are proudly represented by McCarthy Art Gallery.
