The 2013 Pacific Arts Association Annual European meeting will be held from Wednesday, April 3rd to Saturday, April 6th, 2013 at the Roemer- und Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim (

“Small Collections of Oceanic Art: Discoveries, Challenges, Potential”
While Oceanic art collections of the major ethnography museums and of famous private collections are well known to researchers and curators, small collections in multi-disciplinary museums and elsewhere often remain outside the scope of interest. Many of these collections are home to important objects and provide interesting historical insights. At the same time they face special challenges regarding curatorial supervision, publicity and exhibition activities, and also financial restraints. Among other possibilities, cooperation between museums, searching for ways to strengthen local and regional public perception, or the enhancement of internet presence may provide possible solutions.

PAA-E members will be invited to:

Visit the Roemer- & Pelizaeus Museum’s Oceanic art storage

Join an excursion to the State Museum of Lower Saxony in Hannover to view the special exhibition “Taboo – Concealed Powers, Secret Knowledge” jointly arranged by the museums in Hannover,  Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Goettingen

Join an excursion to the Municipal Museum in Braunschweig, re-opened in 2012, presenting in its permanent displays also important Oceanic art objects

Present other topics in the general sessions during the meeting
